An all Day WSS Affair
Aug 2022
4 of the extended Cobs got together for a rare Friday all day game. With a couple having not tasted Lilly Banners and our forthcoming Mega game at the end of October intended to be WSS it was a no brainier.
A great day's gaming, but an Allied victory. All the figures were indeed from my own little collection
The Battle of Aubensburg North
July & Aug 2022
A great 5 week game, victory eventually going to the French & Bavarians
A couple of Small Billhooks (July / Aug 2022)
A couple of great games, mainly fillers in between the large games
Monmouth - June 2022
A great game - Played ahead of the upcoming June Mini Mega game
May 2022 Billhooks - A game
Well following the run through we are 'hooked' - A 2 week game, four of the Cobs each with a 100 point force ; Just for a twist I used a mercenary force !
April 2022 Billhooks - Rule Run Through
At last we got our first game of Billhooks in, WOR rule run through
March & April 2022 - More WSS : Random Forces
Another WSS game with random forces generated. 3 Commands per side played over 5 weeks
March 2022 - ACW Taster
Back into the swing of it all, but with a few of the Cob's unavailable we had a 2 week ACW game with random forces. It's been a while since these lads saw an outing. A great little game which as ever reminded us what a great period it is and how well Fire and Fury plays

AWI - The battle for Chatterton Hill
28th of January 2022
A full update of our January game, we returned to the AWI which once again we found how much we had missed it. A great game that saw the British and Hessian's make hard work of getting across the stream, eventually getting into the attack. It all ended on an extra 'twilight turn as the Hessians broke the American centre.

Random WSS Encounter
24th of November 2021
Well a fair bit of time has elapsed, we played a further 3 nights of the WSS game to bring to a conclusion. In total a 6 week game, the game looked pretty tight until night 5 when the French left cracked under sustained pressure and the gallery of the Prussian cavalry
Hop over to the page for a full photo update
4th of November - A delayed update (Work just gets in the way of important things !) - The game continues with both sides starting to show cracks in there lines but so far no one has managed to get a clear advantage. More to come next
NB - Game page now has gallery's of all nights so far
14th of September to 20th of Oct : 3 nights of Action
Well we returned one of our favorite periods, WSS. A randomly generated affair with 2 forces of equal size but varying quality. We have got through the first 7 turns over a the last 3 weeks and it's turning in to a cracker.

Battle of Gerova 1811
7th of September 2021
We completed the game, and it was agree an honourable draw with praise to the Spanish for putting up such a good spirited defense (With a little support from some Portuguese cavalry)
31st of August 2021
Night 2, and it's heating up. the French have pushed onto the big ridge but the Spanish cavalry caught the French dragoons napping in column. Have the french run out of steam ?
24 of August 2021
Back to what I think is the favorite period, Naps with a Peninsula all Spanish versus the French of course.
I had spotted this as a potential game a while ago, with myself and Phil both having fair sized Spanish forces which we could 'plant' on a ridge line to face a very high quality french force.
Three turns in, and despite strong Cavalry reserves for the Spanish, it's looking grim as the French have made fast progress across the table and have already committed troops to the charge.
Hop over to the page for a few more pics.

The prelude to Newark
19th of August 2021
Night 2 saw the game wrapped up, the Germans have it sir - Only a few pics so hop over to the page to see them
12th of August
Well we are slowly returning to some sort of normal on the games front, it all feels a little alien but the new normal feels good with most of the Cobs back on it but juggling available days is challenging.
So to this weeks game, a little Eastern front WW2 using some of the terrain planned for the Newark demo game - this will run for another week before we return to the Naps

A small WSS to kick us off - See the gallery page for more details of the Prelude to Blenheim.
And I have to report it was a massive Allied victory (Yes I was playing French), we used the adapted withdrawal chart which once again has inspired the thoughts of a campaign.

WELCOME BACK
9th of July 2021
What can I say, hopefully a few of you have been popping back to the site and we may just have given some kind of inspiration.
The good news for the Cob's is that we are getting back to regular gaming, no played big ones though.
I have some photos from a couple of full day games to load up, and then from next week the green light for some two evening games.
More news and updates, hopefully as it happens

WSS Lockdown game
11/11/20
Well a full blown lockdown WSS game played through. No particular battle, just a reason to get the whole collection out and play a game. A mainly french force supported by a Spanish brigade attempts to defeat Eugene's mixed allied force while Marlborough attempts to outflank the French by forcing a river crossing lightly defended by both mounted and dismounted French dragoons.
A victory to the Allies, but at quite a cost and had it not been for the Austrian brigade, especially the grenadiers, the French may well have reversed the result.

Solo (Lock Down) game 3 : Barrosa 'esq'
21st of June
Well a full 4 night update, I decided to run a small naps game and based it on Barrosa. British holding a small ridge with support faced to the front by 2 brigades of French and a flanking movement of 3 Italians with 3 Poles.
A great game that ebbed and flowed, but the Poles made the difference smashing apart the British who just couldn't get their guns into action.

Solo (Lock Down) game 2 : WW 2 desert 'Breakthrough for the fuel'
27th of May 2020
Another double update this week ; Completing the desert game, which was very interesting to play and showed just how topsy turvey the open game can be - hop over to the page for details, who won and some more pics.
20th of May 2020
Double update today ; 2 sessions of the Desert game. It has twisted both ways with the Germans getting some luck but then struggling but an Artillery strike has changed things quite a bit
13th of May 2020
Double quick turn round with me starting my second lock down game. I decided I would go with WW2 and the desert theater mainly driven by the recent increase in terrain for the theater which would give me a chance to see how it all looks. it also gave me chance to get all my desert forces out for a mini photo shoot.

Hi Everyone, little late but an update on the Long Island game. A couple of sessions rolled into one, hop over to the page for photos and update
Lockdown now biting on the games front .. I need a 'real game' !!
22nd of April 2020
First four turns of the Solo Lockdown game played through over the weekend, a little late with the update but Broadband gremlins seem to be on the loose .... Hop over the to the game page for details and pictures.
15th of April 2020
Well with the lockdown there has been no action at Cobs HQ for a few weeks ; Hence the lack of updates from myself
However, I cracked last night and was thrown out of the house by good lady and decided to set up a 'solo' game and plumped for AWI. By using all my collection I have based the game on a very 'bespoke version' of Long Island.

WSS - Encounter
18th of March 2020
Well we met up last night and concluded the current WSS game. 4 of the Cobs, Howard is in self isolation so keep well and safe mate.
the game concluded with French withdrawal checks which they passed.
the next few weeks will be quite, if we can get together we are going to but just some one night only games - a little Saga game next week.
11th of March
Night 2 of the encounter, and it was a night for the Allies. Howard arrived with the British support force that was deployed on the left so that we could try and mass against one of the french forces .... Hop over to the page for more details
4th of March
Normal service has resumed at Cob's HQ following the Mansfield weekend.
We opted for a small random WSS game which should have seen equal sides with variable unit class. However Howard wasn't able to join us so it was a 2:1 french attack until next week when Allied reinforcements are expected

A little pause in proceedings this week, Phil is sliding about in the snow on ski's, Mick had a few issues with his boiler and water and our first mega game of the new year is fast approaching.
So just three Cobs had a little outing with our slow growing Saga forces, an ideal little filler

Napoleonic Peninsular : The Battle of La Mesta
5th of February 2020
Well we wrapped the game ; Just the one, long turn and pack up.
The result ; The French took it despite heroic efforts from the Spanish 2nd Brigade to hammer the French with their own flank attack and the Portuguese efforts to stop the retreat crossroads falling into Frenchie hands.
A great game, lots of unusual things happening and action all the way - Not to many photos, but the ones I got are on the gallery page
29th of January 2020
The game continued, night 4 and it's still all in the balance. The allies decided to push on with the attack and not withdraw ; We will be playing the final turns next week.
22nd of January 2020
Night 3 of the game, only 2 turns played but they were full of action. French dragoons have arrived, a Poruguese brigade and some heavy British Cavalry.
Some vicious melees across the table, and lots of action - detailed update on the page
15th of January 2020
Night 2 of the game saw the action hotting up. Victorious cavalry charges and holwes of 'I dont believe it' with morale throws. Hop over to the page for some more details and photos
8th of January 2020
Well back from the festive season and we have returned to one of our favorite periods, the Peninsular
I was looking for a medium sized game that would be challenging but not require immense amount of troops, so inspired by Peter Morbury's (Elite Miniatures) Day of battle I put together this little hypothetical battle.
A British & France force has been ordered to attack and take the village of La Mesta which is securing the main French battle line ; They made an early start arriving into the valley around dawn in heavy mist. They progressed, but then hey presto the French appeared on the heights from no where.
First 7 turns played

A little festive interlude : Mick and I had a little trip down memory lane, a 7yrs war game using Age of reason rules using his fantastic 15mm collection.
A great day, the rules really tick the box for me and the figures were classics painted as well as I think I have seen 15's

AWI : Brandywine Cornwallis attack
18th of December 2019
Well a double quick update. We finished the Brandywine game last night ; heroic Grenadiers but slow moving support meant the British failed to break through and it was agreed that Cornwallis would have pulled back. So a 'narrow' American victory
We will be taking as little break until the New Year : A small Peninsular Napoleonic game 'The battle of La Mesta' will be starting
17th of December 2019
Apologies for the delayed update, this is actually last weeks,. but a few technical issues prevented me from posting.
We continued our Brandy wine game, progressing through to turn 17. The Americans are feeling quite smug as Cornwallis and his boys were challenged with breaking through by the end of turn 18, which despite heroic efforts from the remaining Grenadier battalion isn't going to happen.
However, dispatches from General Knappson have arrived, which might just extend the time frame.
We will conclude the game tonight
4th December 2019
The Brandywine continues with a further 5 turns, the British have not yet furthered their initial advance but it's hotting up
29th of November 2019
A little late with this weeks update, work and cars ! Mick rejoined the game after last weeks trauma with the dentist and the Americans resumed normal command ; Perhaps this wasn't meant to be !
Another 4 turns in what is turning into a very good game.
20th of November 2019
Well we are back on it after week to recover the Mega Game. An AWI game taken from the British Grenadier scenario book 1. A good start with lots of troops arriving and moving into position. Hop over to the page for more details.

Battle of Bar_Sur_Aube : 1814
12th of November 2019
Sorry for the delayed action report on the battle, the mega game planning over ran me and on the last night I forgot to take any photos BUT thos interested it was a 'very' narrow French victory as they retained the bridge thus allowing them to leave the field of battle under cavalry protection.
23rd Of October 2019
Night 3 of our BSA game, 3 turns played and it's going to run on next week, as despite heavy casualties the allies are getting it together and starting to look like they have half a chance.
16th of October 2019
We continued the BSA naps game, a further 2 turns and it's all starting to brew up nicely with the Allies looking more organised the pressure is mounting for the French.
9th of October 2019
Well back from the sunny trip to Spain for me and a much need gaming fix !
A divisional sized naps game, that looks like it has the making of an challenging encounter, with lots of forethought before moving.

WW2 Mini Games
18th of Sept 2019
Well the beast from the East was well and truly tamed - Pop over to the page for more detail and photos
That's a wrap on updates for a few weeks ; Holiday season for me so the next update will be 8th of October - Naps will be back on the radar with a little scenario featuring Russians, Wurttemburgers, Prussians, French and Austrians (1814 here we come). All ahead of the big 4 day mega game in November.
11th of Sept 2019
We carried on with the WW2 mini games, but it wasn't quite the planned game. Phil (Judith our overseas intrepid explorer) was of on hols in Greece and Tim was unable to grace us with his presence so just 3 cobs to carry the baton.
We kept the table, but dropped the scenario for a later date and started with a random game .. Russians versus German.

Well we have a few holidays coming up over the next 4 to 6 weeks so decided to have a couple of '2 week' WW2 mini games as fillers/refreshers.
The first is an interesting little affair, using late war forces we have Germans sandwiched in between Russians and Americans ... How will that work out then ?

Well we finished off the game last night, just an exercise foe the withdrawal charts, which worked really well. No photos I'm afraid as I completely forgot with game play !
Next week we are returning to WW2, it will be night 1 of a couple of 2 week games driven by various Cob's holidays.
14th of August 2019
Night 3 of our little WSS encounter. Interesting as we ended prematurely with both sides failing withdrawal checks ; However the Allies have called for VAR on the crossroad situation (see the page for more details). However we are going to carry on with the game next week before packing away.7th of August 2019
Night 2 of the Halkern game, with a further 3 turns played we are at the halfway point in theory ; However with mounting casualties on both sides withdrawal checks are imminent which could well see the game end early. It is turning into a cracker with the dice gods still interfering with Phil and everyone rolling to extremes of brilliant or poor.
31st of July 2019
A return to gaming after a week's holiday and we have gone for a WSS game, The Battle at Halkern which is a fictitious campaign style game which allows us to run through our withdrawal procedure ahead of the planned campaign later in the year.
Night 1 : We set up the game, attack defense with 3 French commands tasked with clearing 2 Allied commands from the table.

Night 4 of the Pultusk game : Well the game ended with nightfall, the snow had abated until the last turn which took away the French forces final chances before nightfall but it was a damn close run thing.
Not to many photos I'm afraid, the game took over and some the shots I got are a little poor ; However we have the personnel report sent through to the main HQ from the Russian left flank commander .... The French may find it colorful reading.
10th of July 2019
Night 3 of the Pultusk game saw the French loose 1 of it's commanders to holiday fever, but the return of wandering Cob Tim saw him step in from the subs bench.
More blizzards, close run brigade checks were the order of the day ..... But it's looking bleak for the French as the Russians stand tall and wont budge. Photo update on the Gallery page
3rd of July 2019
Round 2 in the Pultusk game ; The planned 3 turns were played and we are at the halfway point, the snow is creating quite a bit of havoc and honours are about even at the moment but the French are massing so next week will be critical.
More details on the Pultusk

This weeks second update : The battle of Pultusk 1806
An excellent scenario from the 1806_07 Winter campaign of the French against the Russians. Sourced from the Champ de Mars scenario books and adapted for 20:1.
The Russians are under pressure and have made a stand on the ridges to the North of the town hoping to slow down the French juggernaut. They have to retain possession of the heights for 12 turns to have bought sufficient time for the main army to withdraw.
We set the game up and got the first three turns under our belts, 1 snow flurry so far which reduced movement to half and denied any long range fire but it's all clear now. Honors about even with lots of maneuvering, perhaps the French artillery just have it with effective counter battery firing blowing a Russian gun up.

12th of June : A little interlude
Just 3 Cobs last night, a nice chatty night and a small Saga game. 1 7pt force versus 2 4pt forces, a very enjoyable game. Only a couple of pics, they are with the rest of our little Saga games.
Back to full swing next week, a WW2 desert game for Tuesday / Saturday which will then be followed by a 4 week Naps game.
Finally, a bit of a follow up to the Newark demo. A short, very much on the spot with no warming video from wargames guru youtube channel ; link if at all interested in me rambling on and some fabulous video of the games on the day (Our bit is about 22 mins in -

ACW : Jarvis Junction
5th of June 2019
Well we finished the ACW game, with another 4 turns ... It was a union victory, but as clear cut as it looked.
31st of May 2019
5 Cobs got together this week to play a randomly generated ACW game. We needed to keep it small as we have just 2 weeks to play it through due to Judith Garner jetting off again on hols.

The Cob's early year holiday breaks are complete, so we returned to one of our favorite periods (who can't love those flags) the WSS.
4 Random generated Franco forces arrived with random set up and allies.
Hop over to the Gallery page for the gossip.
