Brandywine : Cornwallis's attack
17th of December
Final game night, the British got a further 2 turns to see if they could break through ; But they couldn't.
The Grenadiers in the center seemed unstoppable as Cornwallis led into melee after melee, alas it wasn't enough. Behind them in the center the Hessian's had started to deploy along side the British lines which had already took to much from combined american fire.
On the British left, the Guards suffered their first casualties as they forced Webbs continentals to break - however a solid second line awaited them and time had run out.
Over on the left, the lead British battalions were starting to take to much pain from the Pennsylvania Continentals and need some space to get support to them.
A great game, 20 turns of twists and turns again worked really well with our chosen rules 'British Grenadier'.
10th of December : Night 4
Well with time running out for the British, Cornwallis put the remaining Grenadier unit onto Assault and they indeed did causing confusion in the American center. Can the Hessian's deploy, change to Assault and take advantage ?
On the British left, the Guards finally started to combine their fire taking hold of the woods ; Webb's brave continentals are looking shaky (Testing at dispersal) alongside Sherbournes boys who are starting to feel the effect of well aimed artillery fire.
Over on their right, 8 battalions of British have finally cut through the woods and are massing, but not on a wide frontage ; However they have combined their guns with the center force and it is starting to sting.
Overall, the American 1st line has gone or is collapsing but there are some good steady troops in the second line. Tasked with breaking through in 18 turns (with 17 played) it looks good for the 'smug' Americans.
HOWEVER ; dispatches have arrived from General Knapson indicating he can keep the American main line pinned with effect for a 3 turns, not 1 so it's all to play for tonight as we wrap up the game !
3rd of December 2019 : Night 3
Well the British grenadiers moved into the center and deployed into line, outflanking an american militia unit and it all looked bad for the yanks BUT they then let rip with grape, shot and the kitchen sink over 2 turns and one Grenadier battalion is broken !
The right hand British have continued a slow advance and are now engaging in musketry which is pretty even, over on the left the Guards are slowly destroying Webbs continentals and Sherbournes brave boys look as if they are about to come under heavy fire.
Will the British go onto assualt to try and break through or will the sustained musketry do the job in time.
Night 4 next week, and then a further evening if needed ahead of the Christmas break.
27th of November 2019 : Night 2
The British continued to push quickly towards the rather thin looking American center, however Alexandre has arrived and deployed. It looked fairly promising for the Americans until they tried to create some space and change the orders on the Left wing Militia brigade, it failed and then the Brigade general got carried away trying to change his own orders which led to a withdrawal of the Brigade. It took the Americans another three turns to get them back under control.
The British are pressing, deploying out their lines and starting to sting the Americans on the right and center. The only slow going is from their own right where the 8 Battalions (Which could make the difference) are finding it hard going to get out of the woodlands and deploy.
Next week should the meat of the battle unfold, can the American lines hold to save Washington's army ?
20th Nov 2019 : Night 1
Well started the game last night, with the intention playing through to Christmas break. We got the game set up and 5 turns of mainly manoeuvre in.
Cornwallis, with the Guard have powered on from the allied left heading straight for what appears to be a gap in the American front, but troops are arriving as Washington realises this is the main assault, the American right hand brigade has been cut out of the action and will need order changes to react.
In the center the Grenadiers backed by Hessian's are making steady progress and British are arriving on their right.
The Americans have set up in 2 lines covering the flanks hoping to get the reinforcements deployed in the center.
