Solo (lock down game)- AWI, a be-spoke version of Long Island
11th of May 2020
A couple of playing sessions saw the game wrapped up with night glooming at the end of turn 18. Everything went well for the British as they took the initiative for turns 13 to 16. On the left the leaderless brigade continued with their orders but started to suffer from space and the battery in the redoubt ranging in with canister. On the left hill, the British took full control of the hill as the highlanders moved up and the light Bobs continued it's deadly volleys.
Center right, the Hessian's slogged on and broke the American brigade to take the heights and get the battery up there and unlimbered and on the right the grenadiers complete the flan March, went onto assault orders and quickly dispatched the Carolina militia.
BUT then it all started to go wrong .. On the left the Americans kept a steady line and doled out additional fire from the redoubts leading to 3 British units (Including the highlanders retreating). The hessian s held there own but just couldn't fire the fire power to cause a second withdrawal for the Americans and then it really kicked off. The grenadiers charged the Carolina state line who came up with the volley of the day with a double 6 ; The Grenadiers retreated and with all chance of a British victory before nightfall.
Washington was able to slip away with his army mauled but intact
A great game, one for all the Cobs on an extended table and full ob
29th of April : Night 3 etc
Well a couple more sessions played and we are up to turn 13 of a possible 18 for the British to crack the American position and carry the earthworks.
Early doors the Americans looked to be in control, winning the initiative and getting their fire in first. On the British left it all looked bleak as the battery in the redoubt took out the brigade general and in the center the troops were struggling with massive DP's and the Hessian combined grenadiers retreated from the fire. The only success for the British was on the right were they were able to split the brigade with an ADC taking the Grenadiers and an outflanking movement was on the cards.
Then on turn 7 it started going a bit wrong for the Americans ; Center left brigade fell foul to rounds of double 6 from the light Bobs and despite the the Brigadier surviving twice the combined supporting fire from the attached battery led to a dispersal followed by a failed brigade check. The way was clear, and despite numerous Dps the light Bobs followed by highlanders stormed up the heights. Meanwhile the British far right despite the loss of it's brigadier continued with its orders and has worked it's way through the broken ground.
The American plan of defeating the Hessian's thus enabling flank support has failed, the Hessian despite stuttering and massive Dps and casualties have manged to stay in place pinning 3 regiments of Americans. On the American left it's now hanging in the balance as only 2 small militia units are standing in the way of the Grenadiers.
Do the British have time, can the Americans break the Hessian's and will the grape from the redoubt halt the the leaderless British brigade. The game i think will rest more on who gets their volleys in first
19th of April : Night 2
Four turns in and it's getting very interesting.
The British on the left have reached their intended support position and other than dealing with a small dismounted dragoon skirmish line now have to await part of the central attack or change orders. In the center, to the left the highlanders are struggling under artillery fire and rough ground to make headway which has stalled the attack beyond the light bobs taking the wood. On the right of the center attack the Hessian's just are not in the game, struggling with DP movement and poor long range artillery fire. On the British far right, the Grenadiers with supporting Queens rangers have swiftly arrived on move orders to the wood line. They are now desperate to change the automatic order of Hold which came into play as they achieved their objective .... Gage is fast going over in person.
For the Americans it has been a case of standing to see what's needed, the only action is against the highlanders were 1 off the battalions has come down the hill to try and inflict more pain but got caught with devastating artillery fire.
So ply will commence tonight ; The British plan is for the far right Grenadiers to split off and continue and aggressive flank march/attack, on the left continue the slow engagement and pinning of American troops.
The Americans have their site set on destroying the Hessian's to free up forces to swing to either flank to attack
14th of April 2020 : Night 1
Well the lockdown and lack of gaming at Cobs HQ has finally got to me, and to the boss lady Mrs T and I was kicked out of the house and into the lodge (a horrible thing for her to do ??).
I decided on a solo game, reviewed my AWI collection and decided I could get quite close to the forces required to play a version of the Long Island, so loaded the troop transporters and humbly went out out he lodge.
First night was all about sorting the forces, laying out the table and deploying each side with initial orders.
As ever the British are mainly on Engage and move with 4 'Attacking Brigades.
The Americans, mainly sitting on the high ground, have 3 brigades on the field on hold orders and a final brigade within the redoubt.
Hope you enjoy the photos
All : Keep well and safe in these strange times (Keep your shit together !!)
