WSS : The battle of Halkern (What if, campaign game)
Night 3 : August 13th 2019
Well it all went a little premature !
2 turns in, the casualty count was going through the roof and both sides needed to take a withdrawal check. The French has managed to rally most of their routing units which was going to help and the mighty French guard cavalry under Mick;s command had smashed the my Grenadiers collecting a flag, a vital crossroads as well as securing a secondary road junction. For the Allies it was a little bleaker with a few routing units, cavalry having pursued of the table as well loosing the primary road junction.
The end result was 2 dice for the French, Mick to role and anything but a double six would do - You guessed, a double six.
For the allies we came up with 5 dice, and rolled well over twelve ; However there could be a case of VAR being called in as 2 of the dice given were for the loss of the crossroads, which it would appear was never in their hands !
At the moment it's a draw, but the allies may well be claiming it.
Whatever the result it was another great evenings gaming ; The battle is so well dug in that we are going to play another couple of turns next week before packing away.

Night 2 : August 6th 2019
Another three turns played, which brings us to the halfway point of the game -
The casualties are mounting for both sides, slightly more for the attacking French, and both sides are getting closer to the required number for withdrawal checks.
On the French right the allies are holding off the French attacks and it is a similar picture in the center where perhaps the Allied cavalry are just having the better of it but the french Infantry are now up and deploying is superior numbers. On the left the allied initial success against the French cavalry has now stalled with an all or nothing charge seeing the British Grenadier guards getting cut to pieces. Such is the success of the charge the cavalry have upgraded themselves to guard class !
There will be a number of key Morale / Rally roles next week which could well see both sides adding to their losses and withdrawal checks been needed. The French feel they are in a strong position based on the significant terrain captured, but the allies are counting on the captured standards and killed brigadiers to keep them in the game. All in all it is shaping up for an epic and tense evenings gaming.

Night 1 : July 30th 2019
A randomly generated WSS game, the battle at Halkern. The idea of the game was to set up an attack defense game to further test out our withdrawal procedure in preparation for a possible campaign later in the year.
2 Allied forces were generated as the defenders -
Myself : 3 brigades of Foot (9 Battalions) and 2 Cavalry Brigades (4 Regiments)
Tim : 1 brigade of Foot (3 Battalions and 4 Cavalry Brigades (8 Regiments)
3 French forces as attackers -
Mick : 3 brigades of Foot (9 Battalions) and 2 Cavalry Brigades (4 Regiments)
Howard : 3 brigades of Foot (9 Battalions) and 2 Cavalry Brigades (4 Regiments)
Phil : 2 brigades of Foot (6 Battalions) and 3 Cavalry Brigades (6 Regiments)
The game is set up with the first 3 turns (of a maximum of 12) played ; Currently the allies are just skirmishing with the fast advancing French and appear to be getting the better of it. Casualties have been high for the French with 1 foot Regiment just legging it straight back of the table, some French cavalry taking a bit of kicking in the center mainly by just refusing to charge and the weight of the first British volley causing some misery.
The French have lost a cavalry standard and a brigadier to boot. Still a long way to go, and the French can afford much higher casualties than the allies so next week promises to be interesting.
