February 2020 Mega Game
WW2 : Carentan
21st - 23rd of February 2020
This years February (Mini mega game) was our second WW2 bolt action mega game, and we had decided we wanted plenty of hedge row action so Carentan appeared to have the flavor we wanted.
3 German forces faced off against 3 Allied, and as an encounter we went for 5,500 pts per player with a cap of 2,500 on Armour. This gave most players four of five unique 'platoons'.
With one allied force missing at the start of the game, with an unknown arrival time, the Germans set off with an early advance intending to take key positions as well as push on the town itself. The allied reserve wasn't to long in arriving though - mid afternoon on day 1 just 2 turns into the game. The arrival point was generated onto the German left flank.
The game ebbed and flowed throughout the 3 days, and about halfway through it looked bleak for the Germans as their left looked under severe threat and the possibility of the whole force being rolled up ; However strict orders were given to the commander in the sector (Me !) to hold at all cost's. The cost was quite severe, with heavy casualties but in particular to the 6th Falschermjager who were almost killed to a man (Mick you didn't have to target the medic team with a mortar did you !!), but the sector held but with a lot of luck. The American airmen who shot up his own troops has been offered a honorary Iron cross.
In the center it was tough fighting again, but as the German right flank drove in partially unopposed they were able to make headway despite the sacrifice of many a Sherman, as support for Carentan dwindled.
The end result was declared ; The allies would have to withdraw.
A great weekends gaming, thanks to one and all.
