AWI : Pigot's attack at Newport
29th of Jan 2019 : Night 4
Well the battle came to a dramatic close. The allies continued to advance into the hail of lead, getting ever closer to the American main line in the center which was held by a militia brigade ; Then-
The leading Hessian battalion on the allied right auto dispersed due to more casualties which led to a failed Brigade check and the whole Brigade withdrawing which secured the flank for the Americans (Hurrah from the American gunners).
Several other moral checks were passed, and the Highlanders in the center charged Sherbournes brave boys who not only stood to the charge but dealt out a good beating which saw the Highlanders retreat (Hurrah for Sherbourne). The rest of the center deployed to line and advanced. The American militia, also now taking heavy losses passed its morale.
Then came the final turn, the retreating Highlanders would need to rally and the American Militia would need to test again. The highlanders failed, despite good odds, and went to route. The militia with poor odds stood tall and passed (Hurrah for the militia)
You guessed it - the highlander route caused a Brigade check which was failed and 50% of the British attack in the center withdrew.
A grand American victory was called.
This was a brilliant game, despite the odds against them allies kept advancing and on another occasion may well have broke the American militia. It really seemed too follow the period as we felt it and gave testimony to the British Grenadier rules.
22nd of Jan 2019 : Night 3
A night of moral throws ! The allies continued into the hail of lead from the Americans and despite heavy losses their moral remains resolute.
On the allied right the Hessian's are deep trouble, halted and taking heavy fire they are now been attacked by the audacious American Militia.
On the left flank the brave highland boys threw themselves into the American militia with the first charge of the battle, but with 3 disruption points, a fine volley from the militia with supporting gun fire it was to much and they broke (but have rallied and are on their way back !)
In the center the allies threw the second highland unit at Sherbournes boys and contact looked certain before a volley could be fired ; alas they lost their bottle and halted with mounting disruption points and then took a good volley - Amazing they then held the required test.
It's going to be close as the allies in the center may be able to get into the American militia, we are expecting mass brigade checks that will decide the outcome.
15th of Jan 2019 : Night 2
Well the allies continued to advance at pace, but on the right one British unit has dispersed forcing the first Brigade check (That was past) and on the right one of the Hessian battalions is retreating. However in the center the British, led by highlanders of each brigade are deployed and start to return fire as the rest of the force deploys.
It still looks tough for the allies, and if the American guns can keep sweeping the field with accurate fire it's going to be a hard nut to crack.
8th of Jan 2019 : Night 1
A slightly amended ob to create a non historical refight (allowing nearby troops to move into the battle) sees 4 American brigades holding Butt hill and earthworks against 2 British and 2 Hessian brigades. Random role for which allied units arrived first, and it was the 2 British ones and then random arrival turn for the supporting Hessians.
5 turns played, which has seen the lead British units make steady progress on what looks like a combined assault on the American center ; However the lead battalions have taken heavy casualties and are testing moral under pressure. Both Hessian brigades have made it onto the table and are supporting the assault. The allies need to get into the American force, which is mainly militia, and quick.
